digging the language
you hear a story a fair bit up here around the arrival of Captain James Cook on Australian coastline and the origin of the word KANGAROO. the language in Hope Vale, Guugu Yimithirr, is the source of that famous word - pretty cool, yeah?
so we got fairly excited today when we got our hands on a Guugu Yimithirr-English dictionary. but, there were two things missing from that dictionary. wanna know what they are? (course you do). there is no equivalent in Guugu Yimithirr for THANK YOU or for LOVE.
it was explained to us that in both cases, there is no need here to say these words ever. in Guugu Yimithirr nobody says "I love you" or "thank you", because their actions should always and in every way show their love and/or their thanks.
something to ponder, eh?
